Legends of the Sea is Forivor’s marine-inspired collection of children’s bedding, quilts and accessories, featuring hand-drawn illustrations of wildlife found in Britain’s coastal waters. The collection began with a fascination for the extraordinary creatures hiding beneath our seas and the mystery of what might exist beneath the waves when we cannot see it.

As research for the collection, we visited Anglesey Sea Zoo in Wales to learn more about the marine wildlife found around Britain’s coastline and to find inspiration for our characters. Every fish, seal, whale, mollusc and piece of sea grass on the Dayland side of the design is based on real underwater wildlife. The accompanying character cards encourage children to look more closely, discovering facts about the creatures that inhabit Britain’s seas and the remarkable ecosystems found beneath the surface.

But when night falls and the bedding is turned over, the creatures of Dayland become something altogether more mysterious. Beneath the rippled surface lies an enchanted underwater city illuminated by jellyfish and anemones. Olive the Octopus lights up her tentacles, an orchestra begins to play and the marine creatures you have come to know reveal their magical powers and secret lives beneath the moon.

The sea has always been a place of mystery, with vast areas still unmapped and unexplored, and Legends of the Sea plays with the boundary between what we know and what we can imagine. Drawing on the real creatures of Britain’s seas alongside mythology, folklore and fantastical storytelling, the collection invites children to wonder what might be happening beneath the waves once the sun goes down.
